Introduction:

Embarking on a journey to sunny California, I found myself immersed in the world of Wente Vineyards, an iconic winery with a rich history and a legacy that spans generations. As a recipient of the prestigious 2023 Legacy Award from Les Dames d’Escoffier Int’l (LDEI), my week at Wente was nothing short of extraordinary. From meeting remarkable individuals to exploring breathtaking vineyards, every moment was a testament to the passion, dedication, and excellence that defines Wente Vineyards.

Day 1: A Warm Welcome and Awe-Inspiring Beginnings

My adventure began with a warm Californian embrace as I stepped foot onto the picturesque Wente Vineyards. Welcomed by Nikki Wente, Director of Vineyard Operations and COO, and Chief Winemaker Karl Wente, I was immediately struck by their hospitality and enthusiasm. Spending time with these two exceptional individuals was an honor beyond words. It felt like being a child in a vast candy store, overwhelmed by the myriad of emotions that this remarkable opportunity had stirred within me.

Acknowledging the team at M Cellars and the unwavering support of our guests, I raised a glass of the exquisite Wente Brut to express my gratitude. The day was just the beginning of an incredible journey.

Day 2: A Day of Legends and Legacy

As the sun rose on Day 2, I had the privilege of sharing breakfast with Carolyn Wente, a fourth-generation Wine Grower and Board Chairman, whose legacy is etched into the very heart of Wente Vineyards. Surrounded by the beauty of The Course at Wente Vineyards, a certified Audubon golf course nestled among the vines, I delved into the history of Wente with Carolyn. Her journey from inception to the fifth generation was a tale of perseverance, dedication, and a commitment to excellence that left me in awe.

The day continued with insightful conversations and meetings, from discussing winemaking strategies with Elizabeth Kestwer to experiencing the vibrant energy of downtown Livermore. Each encounter was a glimpse into the tapestry of Wente’s success story.

Day 3: W is for Wente and Wente is for the WIN!

With Day 3 came an immersion into the heart of Wente’s viticulture practices. Alongside Viticulture Manager Hannah Lindner, I explored their grapevine farming techniques and admired the expansive vineyard vistas that stretched as far as the eye could see. The day was punctuated by engaging conversations with winemaker Alec Fraser, whose expertise and passion were palpable as we explored the world of winemaking.

Discussing sustainability and wine quality with Andy Lynch, Director of Quality of Wine and Safety, shed light on Wente’s commitment to excellence and innovation. The experience was a revelation that left me eager to share newfound knowledge with my team back at M Cellars.

Day 4: A Gastronomic and Oenophilic Odyssey

As my week drew to a close, Day 4 was a whirlwind of culinary delights and wine experiences. From engaging discussions with Sarah Espino, Grill Manager at Wente’s golf course, to indulging in delectable food and wine pairings at both Wente Vineyards and Murrieta’s Well, every moment was a celebration of flavor, culture, and tradition.

The day culminated in a memorable dinner at Range Life, where I had the pleasure of conversing with Christine Wente, a true luminary in the wine world. Our connection was instant, a testament to the camaraderie that wine and shared passion can foster.

As I reflect on this extraordinary week at Wente Vineyards, I am filled with an overwhelming sense of gratitude. To Les Dames d’Escoffier Int’l (LDEI) for providing this life-changing opportunity, to the exceptional individuals who shared their wisdom and stories, and to Wente Vineyards itself for opening its doors and hearts to me.
