At M Cellars® Winery sustainability is our goal. To us, this means we strive to maintain the highest standards in our wine and our service. Maintaining our exceptional wine starts in the vineyard. Our vines are meticulously planted, grown, and tended to year in and year out. And, although we work hard, mother nature sometimes has other plans when it comes to the weather conditions we face. This year we have taken a big step to ensure we can protect our prize vines by installing a frost fan!

In early February, our new Orchard-Rite frost fan was installed at our Stoltz Road vineyard. The frost fan, also known as a wind machine, is a piece of agricultural equipment used to protect vines from frost damage.

When the temperature drops to near or below freezing, frost can form on vines, which can damage or kill them. The fans work by circulating the air in the vineyard, pulling warmer air from above and pushing it down, mixing it with the colder air near the ground. This circulation creates a more uniform temperature and prevents frost from forming. Our new fan will help increase the survival of buds and tender growth in cold conditions. This will allow us the opportunity to have more reliable crops which means more estate wines and long-term sustainability.
